Human Factors International 2026 Conference

I am humbled by the opportunity to speak at this year’s Human Factors International (HFI) Annual Conference. Below is a summary of my concept on the "UX Secret Agent" mindset.  I was excited to discuss how we can better bridge the gap between human experience and business objectives. The engagement from the audience was inspiring, and I left the session feeling energized by our shared commitment to creating more intentional and impactful designs. Thank you again for your support and for HFI organizing such a fantastic event.  Sessions are available on the HFI 2026 conference site.

Summary of the Getting UX Right: A New Mindset

Core Theme: The UX Secret Agent

The speech centers on a shift in mindset—moving from simply "doing tasks" to adopting the identity of a UX Secret Agent. This means mastering three core pillars: People, Process, and Tools.

1. Mission (People): The Heart of UX

The Purpose: UX exists solely to serve others. It is about empathy and understanding the "Story Curve" of every product or environment.

The Balance: A Secret Agent must find the equilibrium between Subjective Human Experience (the user) and Objective Business Metrics (the company).

Core Qualities: To succeed, a UX professional has key traits:

  • Systems Thinking: Solving for others, not personal preferences
  • Diplomacy: Navigating the needs of tech, business, and users.
  • Narrative: Telling the story of the journey.
  • Analytical Rigor & Resilience: Learning from the hardest projects to build expertise.

2. Identity (Process): The Methodology

The Four Questions: Every mission begins by asking:

  1. Who is this for?
  2. What are they trying to do?
  3. How often are they doing it?
  4. What is their environment?

The Test & Learn Cycle: Moving through a structured loop

→ Hypothesis
→ Experiment
→ Analysis

The Invisible Architect: The ultimate goal is the "Power of the Invisible." If the user sees no obstacles, the UX is a success. If the business sees the data and the ROI, the UX is viable.

3. Gear (Tools): Technical Mastery

  • The Rule of Mastery: A tool is only as good as the person using it.
  • The AI Frontier: Exploring the three ways to work with AI (Centaur, Cyborg, and Auto-pilot).
  • Prompt Engineering: Moving from "Zero-shot" (hoping for the best) to "Few-shot" and "Seed Crystal" prompting for precise control.

Conclusion: The UX Mindset
True success in UX comes when you combine Belief (Purpose), Planning (Process), and Study (Skills). By mastering these, we move from just "doing work" to making a measurable difference in the world.
