Everyone has blind spots. Merriam-Webster describes them as “the small, circular, optically insensitive region in the retina where fibers of the optic nerve exit the eye, containing no rods or cones.” More commonly, though, a blind spot is understood as “an area you cannot see due to an obstruction.”
Obstructions are hard to see. When designing a product, system, or environment, it’s important to consider what blind spots could be clouding your thinking during user research. Common blind spots that obstruct user experience design include Anchoring Bias, Cultural or Contextual Bias, Dominance Bias, Groupthink, Halo Effect, Moderator Bias, Recency Bias, and Social Desirability Bias.
Common Blind Spots
- Anchoring Bias: The first opinion sets the “anchor” for all later judgments. Example: If the first participant says a product is “too expensive,” later comments may focus disproportionately on cost.
- Confirmation Bias: The moderator or observers look for and remember comments that fit pre-existing assumptions. Example: If a team believes a product is too expensive, they latch onto any negative price comments and ignore positive ones.
- Cultural or Contextual Bias: You interpret information through the lens of your own cultural norms, values, and local environment. Example: In a workshop about home design, someone from a cold climate might value insulation and fireplaces more, while someone from a tropical area might think about open-air ventilation.
- Dominance Bias (Loudest Voice In Room): One participant dominates the conversation, influencing what others say or silencing quieter voices. Example: The group ends up reflecting one loud person’s view instead of a range of perspectives.
- Groupthink: People align their opinions with the group to avoid conflict or stand out less. Example: One person voices a strong preference, and others agree even if they secretly disagree, to avoid tension.
- Halo Effect: A positive impression in one area influences opinions in unrelated areas. Example: If a participant likes a brand’s logo, they might rate its product quality higher without testing it.
- Moderator Bias: The facilitator’s tone, wording, or body language nudges participants toward certain responses. Example: Asking, “Don’t you think this option is better?” rather than “What do you think about this option?”
- Recency Bias: Giving more weight to the last thing someone said or the last topic discussed, rather than considering the whole conversation equally. Example: If a participant makes a strong point at the end of the session, the moderator or other participants might remember it more vividly and treat it as more important than earlier ideas.
- Social Desirability Bias: Participants give answers they think will make them look good or acceptable to others. Example: During a usability test of a healthy eating app, participants might exaggerate how frequently they cook fresh meals at home.
- Sunk Cost Bias: People tend to keep investing in something simply because they've already put time, money, or effort into it—even if it's no longer worthwhile.
Ways to Mitigate Bias in User Research

Be conscious of assumptions, local context, and expectations before starting. Write them down and run a check to see if they appear in your analysis. - Always start with the goal

Use neutral, open-ended questions. Consider mixed methods (e.g., surveys + interviews) to counterbalance weaknesses in any one approach. Years ago, Gerry McGovern discussed why not to use focus groups in user experience research. He said, "The biggest problem: what users say in a focus group rarely matches what they do in a real-life setting." - Bring in Independent Reviewers or Testers
Have someone outside the project, who isn’t invested in the outcome, review your materials or run sessions. - Randomize and Diversify Participants
Recruit participants from a range of backgrounds and experience levels to avoid over-representing one perspective. - Triangulate Data
Compare findings from multiple sources (e.g., analytics, focus groups, usability tests) to spot where bias might have crept in.
Blind spots are all around and can quickly impact the results. Keep them in mind when designing the user experience. Reducing these issues will improve the likelihood of developing a product that is effective, enjoyable, and easy to use.
